Come and discover the Highline Galleria, the path on the rooftops of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The idea of building a street connecting Piazza Duomo to Piazza della Scala was followed by Carlo Cattaneo’s debate for the renovation of the area near the cathedral of Milan. On April 3, 1860, a competition was launched for the construction of the street that would connect the two squares. The competition was won in 1863 by architect Giuseppe Mengoni. The ceremony for laying the first stone was on March 7, 1865 in the presence of King Vittorio Emanuele II. The work was completed in three years.

One year after its inauguration, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan was nicknamed “Salotto di Milano” (Milan’s lounge) and became the seat of bourgeois life. The life of the Galleria was tied to that of the Scala Theater. Thanks to MilanoCard, visit the Scala Museum getting 35% discount (for information, click here). In addition to being a favorite venue to go to the theater, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele became a gathering place for musicians and singers.
